Sóstó Zoo is the first animal park of the country where more than 5000 animals are displayed in large enclosures in a natural oak forest.
Many exotic animal species which are rarely exhibited even in European zoos, live and breed in our park, such as the African elephant, the Indian rhino or the sumatrian tiger.
In the 35 hectares oak forest, animals are exhibited according to the continents where they live. Therefore, visitors can go around the Earth during one day and have a look at the living world of the different habitats. In many areas of the park, animals are shown in mixed exhibits to represent the local animal communities.
Sóstó Zoo was awarded the title of Best Zoo of Europe in the category of less than 500000 visitors in 2015 and 2018. In 2017, the zoo was chosen as the Annual Touristic Attraction of Hungary according to the votes on the web page: szallas.hu.
Close to 500000 visitors enter the park annually, and we always try to provide them with something new, like the polar bear pool with glass walls, the glass tunnel of the 500000 litres shark aquarium, the 3000 m2 Asian jungle with a big waterfall and the bamboo bridge bending at a height of 3 meters above the African exhibit or the canopy trail of the South-American enclosure system.
Main mission of the zoo is to show the visitors how rich and diverse the animal kingdom is. Zoos are last refugees for many animals, since species close to extinction are tried to be saved and bred there in the framework of international cooperation.
Beside remarkable programs like the seal show or parrot show, the most visited attraction is the lemur forest where braver visitors can walk among prosimians.
Hospitality includes the Bamboo restaurant with its unique atmosphere or the zoo hotels which are the only ones in Hungary and there are only a few even in Europe. Staying in the hotel makes the zoo visit to be a complete and memorable experience because hotel guests can visit the zoo without restriction and fall asleep while listening to lion roars.
Sóstó Zoo is also called Zoo of the Extremes because of its exceptional animal collection. We highly recommend you to visit our big cats, the bird collection or the exhibits of the pachyderms and of the ungulates.
Don’t forget to ride on the camels or make a relaxing journey under the shady trees by the electric buses.
